Education is a progressive discovery of one’s own ignorance. In another words, the more you know, the more you know that you don’t know. Just as an old Arab proverb goes“: education is not the filling of a pail, but lighting of a fire.” some people hold the opinion that the purpose of education is to teach students the knowledge on the books while other people think that education should aims at teaching students practical abilities. I argue that the purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

For individuals, the purpose of education is to promote his ability of self-learning, the ability of innovation. The most important part of education is the instruction of how to explore inner side of a person. The purpose of education is not only to impart professional knowledge and skills, but also to fashion the students’ scientific world outlook, value outlook in his life. Just as Max van lane once said: “education is that which remains, if one has forgotten everything he learned in school.” It is shame for us to treat education, the divine cause that promotes the well-being of the humankind, as simply a means to obtain a diploma. Students are learners who are studying the ways of living in the world. The educator should lead students to find knowledge by themselves instead of telling them directly.

For the whole society, the purpose of education is to cultivate all-around developing talents for the society. Talents are the first and strategic resource, so we must give priority to education in a strategic position and rejuvenate our nation through improve the modern education system with Chinese characteristics. To improve the political and economic system and enable culture to flourish is on the way. Education departments should turn the original test-oriented education into the quality education .The final goal of education is to uplift the living standards and quality of life of the people.

All in all, education builds the backbone on which citizen’s livelihood and communities’ growth are rested. It remains an integral part in this ever rapid changing modern society. What we most urgently need is a chance for business sector, government and the general public to work together to realize the real purpose of education. Only by taking concrete and practical steps one after another, can we finally reach our common cherished goal.
