I was born in Liverpool in February, 1938, so I was only 18 months old when

World War Ⅱ broke out. During the bombings, my family lived in a shelter in the back garden of our house. My father did the Day and Home Guard duties at night. Due to the terrific attack in May, 1941, my family had to move away to the countryside. I started school in 1943, but I had to carry a gas mask with me everywhere I went. Once upon a time there was a wicked crook (邪恶的骗子) who only thought about how to get money. Seeing anyone happy bothered him greatly. What he hated most was when people were polite to each other, saying things like “please” and “thank you”, and “dont mention it”. It annoyed him even more if they were smiling when they said these things.

The crook thought all those words were a useless waste. So he spent a lot of time inventing a machine which could steal words. With this machine, he planned to steal words people used to be polite. When hed stolen these words, he intended to take them apart and sell the letters to book publishers. After he started up his machine, people would open their mouths, intending to say kind and polite things, but nothing came out. All those words ended up inside the big machine.

The crook was terribly happy with his success, but he didnt count on two special little girls. Those girls were deaf, and had to communicate using sign language. Because the machine couldnt steal gestures, these girls continued being kind and polite. Soon they realized what had been happening to everyone else, and they found out about the crook and his wicked plan. The girls followed him to his hideout on the top of a hill next to the sea. There they found the big machine busy separating all the words into letters, so the girls came up to the machine and started being polite to each other.

Try as it might, the machine couldnt steal those words, and it started to suffer a power overload, which got more and more serious as the girls went on

communicating. Finally, it exploded, sending all the letters it had gathered flying into the sky. These letters started coming down, like rain, and most ended up in the sea. After that, everyone could be polite and thoughtful again.

Seeing all those letters fall into the sea gave those two little girls an idea. A little while later they opened a factory, making alphabet soup!

56.According to the passage, what did the crook hate most?

A.Happiness. B.Money. C.Letters. D.Politeness. 57.The crook spent a lot of time inventing a machine to .

Clothes can make phone calls, play music, dial your friends number, keep you warm during cold weather and operate your computer.

This is not a fantasy. A British company, called Electrotextiles, has created a wide range of clothes—clothes that have minds of their own! Scientists, working for the company, have invented a kind of fabric (布料) that can be mixed with flexible electronic materials to create intelligent clothing. The results are electronic garments.

If you think the wearer has to be wired to different devices (设备), think again. These designer clothes are wire-free, soft to touch and washable! Like any electronic device, these high-tech clothes have to be powered. Currently, a tiny nine-volt battery serves the purpose. But the researchers hope that in the near future the clothes will produce electricity by using body heat. These clothes are 100 percent shockproof (防触电的), they say.

The Electrotextiles team has also created the worlds first cloth keyboard. This keyboard can be sewn into your trousers or skirt. To use this device, you will have to sit down and tap on your lap! These “lap-tap” devices are all set to take over laptop computers!

Another useful garment is the shirt-cum-mobile phone. This handy invention enables drivers to chat comfortably with others at the wheel! Other popular electronic wears include the denim (牛仔布) jacket with flexible earphones sewn into the hood (风帽) and the electronic ski jacket with a built-in heater. The ski jacket is also programmed to send signals to a satellite. This technology is known as global positioning system and can be used to track lost skiers and wandering kids.

Having completed the cloth keyboard, scientists have already started to work on a new project—a necktie that can be used as a computer mouse. What is the next? Do you have any idea?

Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood and behavior, and human beings are no exception. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, however, symptoms are severe enough to damage their lives and to cause much stress. These people are suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months.

The standard figure says that around 2% of people in Northern Europe suffer badly, with many more (10%) putting up with milder symptoms. Across the world the incidence (发生率) increases with distance from the equator (赤道), except where there is snow on the ground, when it becomes less common. More women than men are found having SAD.Children and young people can also suffer from it.

The problem results from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known.

As the cause is lack of bright light, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a light box or a similar bright treatment. Going to a brightly-lit climate, whether skiing or somewhere hot, is indeed a cure. Outdoor light, even when the sky is overcast, provides as much or more light than a light box. Research showed an improvement in SAD symptoms when individuals took a one-hour daily walk outside. Outside light is often brighter than the light boxes. The preferred level of light is about as bright as a spring morning on a clear day and for most people sitting in front of a light box, allowing the light to reach the eyes, for between 15 and 45 minutes daily will be enough to alleviate the symptoms. The user does not have to stare at the light, but can watch TV or read a book, just allowing the light to reach the eyes.

63.What happens to SAD patients according to the passage?

A.They eat more and sleep less. B.They feel unhappy and worried. C.They dont react to the changing seasons. dark mornings.

A.April.

D.They dislike long days with

64.In which of the following months do SAD symptoms become worst?

B.June. C.September.

D.December.

65.The underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 4 most probably means “ ”.

A.reduce B.cause C.discover

A.Why people suffer from SAD.

D.show

66.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

B.How long an SAD treatment lasts.

C.How SAD patients can be treated. 【答案与解析】

D.Where people can go for SAD treatment.

64.D 文章第1段最后一句“The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months”可知,SAD患者的症状每年大约9月份开始出现,一直延续到第二年的4月份,在白昼最短的月份里情况最糟。

Gateway Academy Pre-term Courses

Our pre-term courses are intended for students who have a conditional (附带条件的) place at a British university but need to achieve a certain level of English in order to be accepted. The course aims to provide students with the English language and study skills that they need in order to be successful. It is important to note that completion of the course does not guarantee students entrance into a university. It is necessary for students to show during the course that they have understood the information and skills that they have been taught and can make use of them in their work.

Pre-term students at Gateway Academy will benefit from: ★Small class sizes (no more than 10 students per class) ★Twenty three hours of instruction per week ★Individual support and instruction ★Regular guest lecturers

★The use of the Academys study and recreational facilities (娱乐设施), including the Language Library, the computer suite, and the academys sports facilities

★A varied social programme including evening entertainments and weekend tours to popular tourist attractions and cities such as Stonehenge, Oxford and Stratford-on-Avon

The course offers an all-round approach to learning, and covers reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. During the course, students will receive instruction on important techniques such as summary-writing and note-taking in lectures. Students will gain experience in working both individually and in groups. As part of the course, all students will work towards a 5000-word project in their own field of study. Students will receive guidance from their teachers on how to conduct research and write it up effectively.

Students will be given a full report on their progress at the end of the course. There is no final examination. Students are judged continuously, taking into account their attendance, successful completion of tasks and participation in class activities. Students need to be aware that the course involves a great deal of coursework, which will require students to manage their time effectively themselves.

Gateway Academy offers three pre-term courses. A five-week course beginning in August is available for advanced level students; a ten-week course beginning in July is available for upper-intermediate (中上等水平的) students. Intermediate level students should take our twenty week course beginning in May. Intermediate level students get a two-week break in July.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Note-taking can help you do well in your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to researching a paper. 71 So here are some tips.

Write down key facts. It can take some experimenting to figure out what information really is helpful, so keep trying and dont give up. 72 For example, some teachers may mention lots of details in class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or piece of information. Thats a clue that its probably important.

Dont over do it. 73 If you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class when they have more time.

Compare. Keep your notes handy when youre doing your reading assignments. Compare what you wrote with what the readings say. 74 Going over your notes with a friend and comparing what the two of you put down can help strengthen what youre learning and alert you and your friend to any errors.

75 Not only can this help you to do better on a test, its also a great chance to gain more confidence when youre studying and find yourself saying, “Hey, I remember that!”

A.Different teachers do things differently. B.Try to put down what the teacher says in class.

C.You may even want to add to your notes as you read.

D.Many teachers give you advice to take notes in class.

E.Youll go crazy if you try to write down every word thats said in class.

F.Note-taking gives your mind a chance to absorb the material it needs to learn. G.But unfortunately, most schools dont have classes that teach you how to take notes.

During the World Cup in 2012, my dad stayed up later just to watch his favorite sport. See his strong interest in this game of 22 men running after a ball, I decide to sit down to watch the game. I found the game excited, and my dad explained for the rules. We shared our joy. Football is not too badly as long as I watch it with my dad! 答案:

1.坚持的重要性; 2.举例说明; 注意:

答案:

One possible version:

Perseverance is what it takes to achieve ones success. Without perseverance, one may find it hard to realize his dream. Only by sticking to what were seeking and trying again and again can we make it at last.

There are lots of examples about a persons perseverance bringing about changes in history or new discoveries in cures for some human diseases. Take Madam Curie for example. To fulfill her academic ambition, she overcame many hardships to go abroad for further education. After her husbands death, she carried on her research work despite a lot of difficulties. Finally, her continuous efforts paid off. She was awarded the Nobel Prize twice.

So, never give up easily when faced with failure. Hold on to your dream and youll surely enjoy a sense of achievement.
