My dad was an electrician and he died in an accident on the job when I was three. So I have no

memories of him. Instead I remembered Mike Fieseler. He was once a teacher whom my mother dated off and on many times of my childhood. My brother Jason and I weren’t his biggest fans. When they stopped dating when I was fifteen, I wasn't happy to see him go. Then, on February18,1991, when I was17, my mother suddenly died of a brain aneurysm leaving my15-year-old brother and me orphans. It all happened so fast. I could hardly think beyond the immediate moment. Generally, when children lose both of their parents, a family member comes forward to take them in. But this didn't happen in our case. It was heartbreaking to lose the person we loved and then to be abandoned(遗弃). Luckily, there was Mike. Even though he lived about an hour away from our house, it felt like he was there in a minutes. He became our guardian(监护人).Over the years, he has become not only our guardian but also a real father to us. When I feel into difficulties in college, unable to get past thoughts of my mother and all I had lost, he was there to listen. And what more could you want from a father than that?

Eight years after Mike stepped forward, he walked me down the aisle and saw me get married. Four years after that, I gave birth to his first granddaughter, Emily Mike Simonson. The name is a reminder of my saved past and a promise for the future. I didn't belong there; I was only pretending to belong there. The truth was, halfway through university, I knew I did’t want to be a doctor. And I had to decide whether to keep lying to myself, or change course(课程)

Before university, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I’d always wanted to do English but my parents said there was no money in it. I thought I’d just pick a job that looked well-paid and would make my parents proud. “Doctor” hit them both, so I decided to do medicine. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but didn't expect to find it as hard as I did. I spent many late nights and weekends studying, but still didn't get good grades. I thought maybe a medical internship(实习)would help, but my internship was where I realized how little I wanted to be a doctor.

I had two choices - either keep lying to myself or change course. Changing course would make the past two years of university a waste of time and money. After a lot of long walks on the beach, I decided that the last two years were a worthwhile waste of time and money, because they led me to find out what I really wanted to do with life. My dad still tried to convince me to go back to medicine. It's okay, though — they are just trying to look out for me.

I changed my course to English and suddenly I was enjoying university. I was still studying late, writing ad night and through the weekend, but, this time, enjoying the pain.

Changing course is a major decision, and it can seem like the last one you want to make. But if you find out what you want to do, then it can be one of the most important decisions you ever make.I needed a couple of years and a lot of thinking to realize that. My advice is to accept the risks and think more about the good sides, (f you are anywhere close to thinking you need to change course, just do it. 66 Before university

A. the writer never wanted to study English

B. the writer knew clearly what he wanted to do with his life C. the writer thought it would be easy to become a doctor D. the writer's parents stopped him from choosing English

67. The writer decided to do medicine at first because . A. he wanted to help more people B. it would make his parents happy C. he was interested in it D. it was cheap to study medicine 68. What was the writer's problem? A. He fought with his parents a lot.

B. He didn't like medicine at all and he considered about changing course C. He couldn’t get on well with others during the medical internship. D. His family was so poor and needed him to make a lot of money. 69. The writer thought his two years on medicine A. was only a waste of time and money B. helped him in some way

C. made him realize how much he wanted to be a doctor D. was the best time he ever had 70. Which do you think is TRUE?

A. The writer enjoyed his university time at the very beginning. B. It was really hard for the writer to communicate with his parents.
