Step 1 Listening and Speaking Activities

1. Formulas for expressing commands

Bill , come over here .

You ought to revise the lessons before the exams .

You must spend at least one hour on your lessons every night .

Don’t watch TV for more than half an hour … don’t go out to play football every day .

Do you mind not making so much noise ? Follow me .

You must be careful .

You mustn’t smoke in the office . You’re to stay here until I return . Jack and Susan stand over there ! Faster ! Not so fast ! This way ! Bring it here .

Mike , Billy and Tom , you form a group and discuss this topic . Do eat up your din-din . Go ahead ! Off you go ! Down your leg ! Up you come !

Now , what are the results of your exams ? Can I have a look at the school report ? Do you object to cleaning the room for the party ? Will you be quiet ?

2. Listen and speak :

Listen to the following conversation twice and try to tick what you have heard as the correct answer to the questions .

2

3. Try to speak more

1) Listen to the tape

2)Explanation of the conversation :

Blank : without writing or print ; unmarked Make sense : have an understandable meaning Eg. What you say makes no senses .

Make a fuss of /over sb./sth : pay particular and often excessive attention to sb.

/sth .

Eg. Don’t make so much fuss over the children . Be blind to sb. /sth. : be oblivious to sb. /sth .

3) Read the conversation by themselves and then try to memorize

them .

Invite two pairs of students to speak before the class and then exchange their roles .

Depending on the cue box on the right , ask them to make up another

conversation .

Act out the conversation. 4) Make your own dialogue

Presentation Team work

5) What are they for ?

Explanation

Pair work : matching the exercises 6) If you want to learn more

Will you be quiet : impatient command Din-din : dinner , spoken to children

Somebody let me out : informal style , a casual command

Down your leg : used to children , in training , or very familiar people

Step 2 Reading Comprehension and Language

Activities

1. Warm-up questions and discussion 2. Listen to the text twice

3. Read the text and try their best to answer the questions .

Section 1 --------- The most awful time in taking exams

When is the most awful and terrible time for someone taking an exam ?

(When you take an exam , the most awful and terrible time comes at the

3

beginning and at the end .)

Section 2 ------- at the beginning of taking exams

What are the troubles for those who revise before an exam ? (Those who set out to revise always wished that they had started revision a lot earlier , and had written everything a bit more clearly . Besides , they find there always are things which take their attention away from their work . ) What is meant by the sentence “you can’t put the clock back ”?

(It means Once something has been done , it cannot be undone in the text . The writer means it is no use regretting the poor handwriting and loss of time .) What does the expression “strange amusements ”refer to ?

(Strange amusements refers to the students’ sudden urge to do things such as tidying up their rooms although the untidy rooms have not been bothered for a long time .) What is the main trouble for the second group -------- those who don’t revise ? (The main trouble for the second group is that they have neither the determination nor the willpower to force themselves to revise , even though they know what they should be doing . So they suffer the most severe guilt complexes . )

Section 3 -------- at the end of taking exams

Why does the writer have a desire “to light a fire with all your notebooks and files ” ? Why can’t she do that ?

(Because examinations are a nightmare to “teenagers ”they would put an end to this nightmare . But they cannot do so , because they may have to re-take their subjects if they fail .) When is the worst day in the exam procedure ? (The worst day in exam procedure is the one when you know that the postman is to deliver the letter .) Why does the letter in a brown envelope seem so important to an examinee ? (The letters contains the results of your exam , which will decide your fate : succeeding in study , getting a job , going to the university you wish to attend , or failing the exam . ) What is the most horrible horrible news the letter may bring to an examinee ? (The most horrible news the letter may bring you is that you have failed in the exams and need to suffer all the horrors again . )

4. Practicing asking and answering the questions in pairs . 5. Retell the text using the key words .

6. Explanation of the new words and phrases .

A4 : a type of paper sized 29.5 cm by 21 cm

Digesting the delights of pure mathematics : The narrator is being ironic in

saying this . The abstract mathematics is probably enjoyable only for those mathematics prodigies rather than ordinary teenagers .

Guilt complexes : A complex is a psychological or emotional problem . The

person who suffers a complex is usually under a severe

4

obsession of a particular concern . In the text , the writer means that those who fail to work hard for examinations would keep feeling guilty of lacking willpower . The phrase is the author’s coinage out of the phrase Oedipus Complex . We can also talk about “inferiority complex .”

Await : a more formal phrase for wait for .

Assignments

P 132 Exercise 6 3. Oral practice :
